The Temperature of Cheese

Now that we are in summer, it would be interesting to know how to preserve cheeses. It is true that the ideal temperature depends on the different types of cheese.

That is to say, hard cheeses such as Parmesan would range between 8-12 degrees; soft cheeses between 4-8 degrees; fresh cheeses should not rise above 4 degrees.

It is important to know how to preserve each cheese, to avoid losing any of its properties, such as its flavour or texture. If a cheese is kept at a lower temperature than recommended, its texture may harden; on the other hand, if it is kept at high temperatures, it may favour the development and growth of mould, which will damage the cheese.

As for its conservation in the fridge, the best place would be in the vegetable drawers, as this is the coldest area, always wrapped in its packaging or, failing that, with cling film or airtight containers, to prevent the cheeses from drying out and thus maintaining their humidity.

As for freezing cheese, it should not be frozen as it is a fresh food. However, if it is the case, it all depends, of course, on the type of cheese and it is always recommended to freeze it in small portions.

What is the ideal temperature for consumption?

Once again, depending on the type of cheese. However, with all cheeses it is advisable to allow them to cool for half an hour before serving and it would be best to eat them at between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius.
